Kevin and Julie Walker met in college
at
Hardin Simmons University in 1980. They got
married a year and a half later. They were discipled by
Charles Culpepper, W.O. Elmore, and
Darrell and Connie Feemster. These young
years of being mentored help them form the walk with God that they enjoy
today. As young youth ministers, Kevin began to write
songs and lead worship and Julie began to learn sign language. Both of them
saw God move dramatically in their spiritual lives through
small retreat settings and one-on-one sessions of encouragement from their own mentors.
Julie is now a certified deaf interpreter and Kevin has several published
songs.
Even in the early years of ministry Walkit began to form.
The idea of mentoring others in a small group or one-on-one setting seemed the
best way for the Walkers to communicate the life message God has
entrusted to them. Kevin says, “The key is to stop living for God and
to start living from God.” Julie adds, “Both of us are good at
conversations and love being with people. We usually can help others
navigate by using our own failures and successes.”
Kevin has lead worship in all kinds of settings. He has
lead in large Baptist gatherings, Bible Church worship services, as well as
charismatic groups. Kevin and Julie’s friendships range from people like Ron
Jones, Senior Pastor of Immanuel Bible Church in Washington, D.C.
to Dr. Jack Deere, pastor of
Wellspring Church in North Richland Hills,
Texas. This variety in relationships helps them minister to all kinds of
worship pastors and leaders from various theological backgrounds.
Kevin also was the worship pastor for 14 years at
Pantego Bible Church in Ft. Worth, Texas.
Julie and Kevin learned so much about living simply and intentionally in
community from their pastor, Randy Frazee, who is now the senior pastor at
Oak Hills Church in
San Antonio, TX.
Randy is best known for his books “The Connecting Church” and “Making Room
for Life”. Being surrounded by this kind of environment, Kevin and Julie
know how to help others simplify their lives and have rich relationships.
“I Call You Faithful”,
the song
that Kevin co-wrote with his friend Bobby Price, won a Grammy for Gospel
Performance of the Year in 2006—performed by Donnie McClurkin. This and
other published songs allow the Walkers to invest in young psalmists who
have the heart to write.
Kevin and Julie moved to Monument, Colorado in August 2007. Part
of the Walkit vision is to bring seasoned worship pastors to the mountains
for replenishment. Monument is near Colorado Springs and is one of the most
beautiful areas in Colorado. The other part of the Walkit vision is to
partner with a like-minded church that sees the promises of investing in
future generations of worshippers.
Tri Lakes Chapel in Monument is that
church. Senior Pastor, Ed Rowell, has developed future leaders for years and
shares this same vision. Kevin leads worship and Julie interprets for the
deaf at Tri Lakes Chapel each Sunday while training interns and others to
align their heart with God’s heart.
